Safetyflex crowned winners at 2013 National Business Awards

A Coventry manufacturer has been branded the most ‘innovative’ company in the UK after scooping top prize at a national awards ceremony.

Safetyflex Barriers, which is based in Boston Place, scooped the Innovation Award at the 2013 National Business Awards this week.

The company, which won a multi-million pound contract to secure more than 20 sites at last year’s Olympic Games, beat a wealth of businesses to gain the title.

The award recognises the enterprise that has most successfully applied innovation in the past year.

Rob Gerrard, managing director of Safetyflex Barriers - which is part of the GME Springs group, said: “We’re thrilled to have won this year’s Innovation Award.

“The foundation of the company is built upon applying traditional manufacturing knowledge and skills to produce cutting edge security products for the UK and international security markets, and it’s this approach which sets us apart from competitors and I think impressed the judges.

“Innovation is at the forefront of all anti-terrorist security bollards and barriers and winning one of the most prestigious business awards in the UK is fantastic recognition for the company and our team.

“We’re constantly bringing new products to market to protect buildings and infrastructure and we have ambitious plans to strengthen our position in the security market even further.

“Winning the National Business Award only gives us added confidence to continue the growth of Safetyflex Barriers and kick on even further.”

The 12th annual National Business Awards were held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel and was opened by a video address from David Cameron.

The Prime Minister’s message was followed by Sir Bob Geldof, who spoke to the 1,200 business leaders about the role of business in society.

Other winners on the night included Sainsbury’s, Hermes UK, UKFast, DPD UK, Newton Europe Limited and Wates Group Limited.

And the prestigious Leader of the Year Award was presented to Harriet Green of Thomas Cook.

Alex Evans, programme director of the awards, said: “The full spectrum of British business has been honoured in 2013 - from exemplary social enterprise to fast growth start-up, inspirational SME to transformational PLC, and dynamic entrepreneur to visionary CEO.

“The National Business Awards truly reflect the quality and diversity driving economic growth in the UK.”
